Headquarters and Headquarter Company
January 10, 1971

Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0718hrs 26 Engineers reports mine sweep started at this time. At 0810hrs S-4 Dolphin 284 is on station for re supply. At 0930hrs 716 RF Company while on patrol made contact with 8 to 10 VC small arms fire was exchanged resulting in 2 VC KIA and 1 M-16 CIA with no friendly casualties. At 1004hrs Primo 4 is on station for 1 hour for Command and Control Helicopter. At 1045hrs Re supply bird is breaking station at this time. At 1117hrs Primo 4 the Command and Control Helicopter is breaking station. At 1400hrs S-4 Dolphin 284 is on station for re supply. At 1450hrs Primo 4 is on station for 1 hour Command and Control Helicopter. At 1510hrs Re supply bird is breaking station at this time. At 2345hrs PF 165 vicinity 698550 spotted 1 Platoon VC, they didn’t have a radio so they returned to OP Wink and engaged with organic 81 and artillery. Results is unknown with negative friendly casualties, this is not US confirmed. Legend: 1st Platoon 71-76, 2nd Platoon 91-96, 3rd Platoon 41-46, 4th Platoon 01-06, CO-08.

Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco. SP4 JOE HENRY LILLIE WAS LISTED AS KIA (was found dead in Hootch Asthma Attack).

 

Alpha Company
January 10, 1971

Alpha Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Liz. At 0710hrs Alpha Company 1st Platoon ambush moved out to check area between grids BS712436 to BS716436. This area was engaged by artillery at 0320hrs because of radar sighting of 5 to 7 personnel stationary at 0717hrs negative findings at BS712436, at 0740hrs negative findings at BS716438 and moving back to LZ Liz. At 0900hrs Alpha Company 1st Platoon patrol is at checkpoint 3 vicinity BS724430. At 1002hrs Alpha Company 1st Platoon patrol is at checkpoint 1 vicinity BS740423. At 1705hrs Alpha Company 3rd Platoon patrol is moving out for BS722420.

 

Bravo Company
January 10, 1971

At 0747hrs Bravo Company 1st Platoon on way to Day Ambush found Booby trap vicinity BS638567, it was a small tuna can with approximately 1 pound of Petna and a smoke grenade fuse, with a trip wire across the trail. Booby trap was located in a clump of bushes next to the trail, believed to be 2-3 months old; it was destroyed in place. Bravo Company will set up multiple Day Ambushes in their Area of Operation today. At 1026hrs Bravo Company 2nd Platoon patrol is moving to BS648556, Day Ambush in location at BS642557, 3rd Platoon Day ambush at BS631563 and 1st Platoon Day Ambushes at BS631556, BS642571. At 1105hrs Bravo Company 3rd Platoon patrol is moving out for BS632556. At 1300hrs Bravo Company 2nd Platoon patrol is moving out for BS647561. At 1725hrs Bravo Company 2nd Platoon patrols closed at BS645553, 3rd Platoon patrols closed BS632567 and 1st Platoon patrols closed at BS642566. At 1945hrs Bravo Company Command with 2nd Platoon at BS645554, 3rd Platoon at BS630555, 1st Platoon at BS641565, BS634564, BS633565 and 2nd Platoon at BS645553 and BS645555.

 

Charlie Company
January 10, 1971

At 0724hrs Charlie Company 1st Platoon ambush closed on BS693538, 2nd Platoon moving out to check area vicinity BS6757, where 2 to 3 personnel were spotted at BS691940, they were engaged with 81mm WP and M-60. At 0853hrs Charlie Company 2nd Platoon checking the area of radar sighting last night 691940, found signs of personnel in the area, they found footprints evading to the southeast. They believe the 2-3 personnel were with in 5 meters of where WP rounds went off. The followed the trail (footprints) to where personnel entered a stream and lost trail there. At 1015hrs Charlie Company reports that BS695554 a RF detonated a booby trap, a small can of Petna located near a rice paddy dike, trip wire was camouflaged with vines. Booby trap approximately 1 week old and not on a trail, 1 RF wound lower extremities. At 1510hrs Charlie Company requests Urgent Dust Off for 2 US with gunshot wounds, completed at 1620hrs. While on patrol 1st squad 3rd Platoon stopped and questioned a 35 year old Vietnam female vicinity BS706565, in the area of an old hooch. The female was released after questioning, shortly after the patrol was engaged by 3-4 VC firing approximately 60-90 rounds of semi-automatic small arms. Simultaneous with the exchange of small arms fire a hand grenade was thrown from the North side of the river impacting among the group with results 2 US were WIA, 1 with gunshot wound to the hip, the other with frag wounds to the leg and shoulders. Dust Off completed at 1610hours. Shark 3 covered the Dust Off and expended in the area of contact. The remainder of the element reinforced the 1st squad. While sweeping the contact area they found 1 M-2 booby trap with trip wire release vicinity BS707566. It was hidden in a hedgerow they destroyed it in place. Continued to sweep and found 3 sets of footprints, which they followed east until they disappeared in a hedgerow. The search terminated at 1830hrs and headed back to OP Wink. At 2035hrs Charlie Company 3rd Platoon is located at BS705555, RF ambush closed on OP Wink and reported sighting a Platoon sized VC/NVA force moving east at BS694548, Artillery being fired into the area. Charlie Company reports the following SGT Sidney R. Lincoln Gust shot wound and PFC Luke F. Fullenkamp Multiple Frag Wounds where evac to 91st Evac Hospital.

 

Delta Company
January 10, 1971

Delta Company moved out again and used Patrolling and day ambush in their Area of Operations. At 0640hrs Delta Company 3rd Platoon ambush is moving out for BS712476. At 0640hrs Delta Company the 1st Platoon ambush at BS754568 received 3 rounds of small arms fire from approximately 300 meters to their Southeast. They engaged the area with small arms with negative results. Delta Company continued with patrolling and daylight ambush. At 0706hrs Delta Company Command Post, 2nd Platoon and 3rd Platoon is in their Patrol Base at BS711478. At 0721hrs Delta Company 1st Platoon ambush closed on BS753563 and patrol to BS745568. At 0725hrs Delta Company 2nd Platoon ambush in location vicinity BS708485 with 3rd Platoon ambush in location vicinity BS712476. At 0853hrs Charlie Company 2nd Platoon checking the area of radar sighting last night DATE/TIME 091940, found signs of personnel in the area. They found footprints evading to the southeast. They believe the 2 to 3 personnel were within 5 meters of where WP rounds went off. They followed the trail (footprints) to where personnel entered at stream, lost trail there. Delta Company continued to use multiple patrolling in their Area of Operation. At 1700hrs Delta Company 3rd Platoon patrol is moving out for BS712480 with 1st Platoon patrol at checkpoint 2 vicinity BS753575. At 2029hrs Delta Company locations Delta Command Post 2nd and 3rd Platoon BS711478, 1st Platoon BS753568 and BS747579.

 

Echo Company
January 10, 1970

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. Echo Company Headquarters has the responsibility for Base Defense. Recon Platoon continued their Security Mission for 1-20 Infantry. At 0920hrs Recon Platoon is closing on LZ Liz. At 1610hrs Recon Platoon is moving out for BS715436. At 1650hrs Recon Platoon vicinity BS734432, while en route to ambush location detained 1 male. While searching him they found a list of most of the LT and SGT in the 1-20 Infantry. When questioned about this list the man, stated he was a Buddhist Monk. Male dressed all in purple, age 21, will be evac to LZ Liz and then sent to MACV Mo Duc. At 1846hrs Recon Platoon vicinity BS728436, an 8 man Recon patrol ambushed 15 to 20 NVA/VC element killing 5 immediately. The NVA/VC were moving from West to East and evaded to the west. Small arms fire was exchanged and artillery was fired. Shark 3 and a flare ship come on station and were searching the contact area when Shark 3 received 6 rounds of small arms fire from the contact grid. Combat Assault was requested 1st PZ 1941hrs and last LZ, was at 2005hrs. Insertions made at BS707430 and BS724448 with a total of 35 packs. Elements are continuing to sweep. Results to date 5 NVA KIA, all dressed in green uniforms, wearing NVA pistol belts, Chi Com and some were damaged.
