Headquarters and Headquarter Company
February 29, 1968

Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Thunder and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0105hrs 1-20 Infantry Security Platoon received 2 M-79 rounds negative casualties at BS936223. At 1140hrs 1-20 Infantry Security Platoon at BS932225, observed 1 VC evading with results 1 VC KIA, 1 M-26 hand grenade CIA. At 1705hrs SWIFT BOAT duty Officer observed 2 trawlers, 1 on course it is presently heading it should hit 2 kilometers north of Qui Nhon between 2100-2300hrs 29 February and 2 should hit at BS7985 between 2300hrs to 2400hrs 29 February 1968. At 2300hrs E Troop at BS883304 observed 8 rounds of unknown caliber, hit village northwest of bridge 105, no friendly fires of troops in area.

Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco.

 

Alpha Company
February 29, 1968

At 1930hrs Alpha Company was in a Night Larger Position at BS856366 with ambush at BS855364. The 11th Brigade was informed that an unidentified trawler had been detected by two U.S. Navy Swift Boats operating approximately three miles off shore in the brigade area of operations. The 1-20th Inf. was directed to dispatch ground elements to the vicinity of the of the observed naval activity to block any attempts to land personnel or cargo on the beach and to seal off the beach area from possible support from Viet Cong ground units. The battalion reacted most aggressively and moved Alpha Company by Armored Personnel Carriers from their Night Lager Position. Alpha Company moved four kilometers north of the area to be cordoned off, while a platoon from Delta Company 2nd Platoon was moved by foot from an ambush site two kilometers to the south of the expected landing site. During the operation, continuous illumination was provided by flare ships, the direct support artillery battery and the Heavy 4.2 mortar Platoon of the 1-20 Infantry it was like turning night into day.

 

Bravo Company
February 29, 1968

At 1100hrs Bravo Company moved into LZ Bronco for their Stand Down first one for Bravo Company.

 

Charlie Company
February 29, 1968

Charlie Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Dottie and continued to use Search and Destroy operations in their Area of Operation. At 2330hrs Charlie Company at BS752552 engaged 1 VC results being 1 VC KIA.

 

Delta Company
February 29, 1968

Delta Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Thunder. At 1216hrs Delta Company at BS884315 found 1 Chi Com Hand grenade in bunker, and destroyed. At 2110hrs Delta Company Night Ambushes will be at BS886308, BS886312, and BS884317.

 

Echo Company
February 29, 1968

Echo Company and 4.2 platoon where located on LZ Thunder to provide direct support to the Battalion. At 1400hrs Recon Platoon at BS824273 observed 10 VC, 2 of VC had weapons, calling in artillery at this time. At 1930hrs Recon reports their location at BS806308. At 2007hrs Recon reports 6 VC KIA checking for possible others, at BS796315. At 2030hrs Recon Platoon requests flare ship, ship on the way to target area at BS806301. At 2045hrs Recon at BS828264 observed 8 HE rounds of at 800 meter from position our location and counter mortar radar surveillance requested.
