Headquarters and Headquarter Company
October 7, 1968

Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Dottie and will continued to work with ARVN units their Area of Operations. At 0630hrs 1-1 Calvary at LZ Dottie requested Dust Off for man with muscle spasm in back, Duct Off completed at 0620hrs. At 0640hrs 1-1 Calvary at LZ Dottie departed this location at 0620hrs. At 0714hrs Alpha and Bravo Companies crossed the Line of Departure at 0713hrs. At 0751hrs Helix 31 conducts a Air Strike with results 2 secondary explosions, 2 structures destroyed and again at 0802hrs same location this time 2 secondary fires and 1 structure destroyed. At 0846hrs 1-20 TOC reports Aerial Scouts at BS720893 engaged 3 VC evading, results 3 VC KIA, observed 1 BAR on the ground and did not pick it up. At 0903hrs Helix 31 at BS782859 and BS724880 on enemy bunkers and trench lines, results 2 bunkers destroyed, 5 spider holes destroyed and 4 structures destroyed, 2 structures damaged and 100 meters of trench line destroyed. At 0923 Aerial Scouts at BS730855 engaged 2 VC evading results 2 VC KIA. At 0940hrs Message to Division TOC the Command Post of 1-20 Infantry has departed LZ Dottie for LZ Uptight at 0930hrs. At 1027hrs Helix 04 BS727823 conducts a Air Strike on bunkers, trench lines and mine fields. At 1050hrs Helix 04 conducts an Air Strike at BS779824 and BS738874 results 60 meters of trench line destroyed. At 1250hrs Helix 31 conducts an Air Strike at BS740873 on suspected enemy location with negative results. At 1307hrs conducts their Air Strike at BS740872 on suspected enemy location with negative results. At 1310hrs Helix 31 conducts Air Strike at BS789865 on enemy bunkers and trenches, results 100 meters of trench destroyed and 4 bunkers destroyed. Helix 31 conducted Air Strike at BS789865 on any bunkers and trench with results 3 bunkers destroyed and 4 Spider holes destroyed. At 1336hrs Helix 31 conducts Air Strike at BS867831 on bunkers and trench lines. At 1405hrs Helix 31 has fighters in area with 20mm Air Strike in support of Charlie Company. Helix 31 and Helix 02 continued to conduct Air Strikes on bunkers and trench line in the, 1-20 Infantry Area of Operation. At 1920hrs 1-20 Infantry reports the Command and Control Helicopter at BS741829 received small arms fire, have rotor problems in unable to fly. It appears that the Command and Control Helicopter will not be available for duty today so request extension for utility ship until resupply units is completed tonight, altitude for Command and Control helicopter is 1500’. At 2356hrs 1-20 Infantry request flare ships and Gun ships received approximately 15 rounds mortar fire believe to be 82mm mortar rounds. At 2210hrs 1-20 Infantry TOC location of 1st Platoon 1-1 Calvary location at BS669940 unit became stuck in mud at above location, also threw a track on 1 of their vehicles, all repairs have been made, unit is in contact with 1-20 Infantry now.

Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco.

 

Alpha Company
October 7, 1968

Alpha Company in Task Force Alpha and Bravo Company cross the Line of Departure at 0713hrs. At 0810 at BS732868 received sniper fire from approximately 25 VC with automatic weapons and small arms weapons have FAC on station will put Air Strike in that area. At 0810hrs Alpha is at BS723847 received sniper fire results 1 US WHA was Dust Off at 0832hrs Dust Off made by helicopter that was flying in the area and 1 WIA man had slight flesh wound not dusted off. At 1020hrs Alpha Company at BS728884, found 4 82mm Mortar rounds in village, 4 shotgun shells, 5 22 mortar fuses, and several mud bunkers. At 1040hrs Alpha Company engaged 2 VC evading results 2 VC KIA and then at BS725886 they engaged 1 VC evading results is 1 more VC KIA. At 1316hrs Alpha Company at BS735874 located a tunnel found 5 hand grenades, 2 NVA uniforms, 5 rockets of unknown size or type, also found 1 set of web gear and some medical gear. Do not have time to search the tunnel completely, will sweep through area later. At 0803hrs Alpha Company is at BS760850 and at 1905hrs Alpha Company established the Night Defense Position at BS772852. Battalion has had problems with booby traps on the first Day of Operation Logan Field. Alpha Company reports SP4 Douglas Tilden gun shot wound to 27th Surgical Hospital and PFC Timothy A. Dwyer with multi-frag wounds to 312 Evac Hospital.

 

Bravo Company
October 7, 1968

C Troop 1-1 Calvary left LZ Dottie at 0630hrs to join Bravo Company. Who spotted 2 VCS evading detained 1.Task Force Bravo, Bravo Company 1-20 Infantry without C troop-1-1 CAV Operation Logan Field conducted attack in crossing the Line of Departure at 070713hrs October 1968 and searched and cleared in zone to seize objectives 1 at 1038hrs vicinity BS760893 and at 1515hrs Bravo Company is at BS760862 which is their Night Defense Position. At 1845hrs Bravo Company at BS729892 engaged 3 VC results in 3 VC KIA vicinity of Objective 2 no ID or documents. Naval gunfire provided timely support to TFB along Axis B as they moved to Objective 2. At 2210hrs Location of C troop 1-1 Calvary is at BS669940 unit became stuck in the mud at above location also threw a track on one of their vehicles, all repairs have been made and unit has established contact with 1-20 Infantry. At just before 2400hrs, Bravo Task force received approximately 25 to 30 rounds of 60mm and 82mm mortar rounds, returned fire with results US casualties were 1 KHA and 8 WHA (E) and 12 US minor. Also 10 RF WHA where evac, with counter fire did received 1 secondary explosion at BS712863 and Gun Ships and Flare Ships are providing air cover. Bravo Company reports SP4 JAMES RANDALL JONES IS LISTED AS KHA.

 

Charlie Company
October 7, 1968

Charlie Company and Recon Platoon made their Combat Assault from LZ Buff 1st PZ into LZ Lee complete by 0816hrs and at BS731822. Charlie started the Search and Clear Operation to secure objective 8, Recon Platoon screened the right flank of Charlie Company and attempted to maintain contact with the 2nd ARVN Division elements south of the Diem Diem River by 1032hrs Charlie Company main element is at BS724818. At 1405hrs Charlie Company at BS737826, received 15-20 rounds of sniper fire with negative casualties. Helix 31 has fighters in area with 20mm after air strikes will sweep through area. At 1645hrs Charlie Company is receiving automatic weapon fire and has received RPG rounds negative casualties, and calling in Artillery and have request another Air Strike after the gun ships have expended their ammo and have gone to rearm. At 1800hrs Charlie Company at BS746830 received sniper fire 1 US WHA with gunshot wound in side Dust off Completed at 1759hrs. Charlie Company not receiving fire at this time. At 1905hrs Charlie Company is located at BS744824. At 2010hrs Charlie Company reports action at BS746830 Charlie had 6 WHA 1 was Dusted Off at 1752hrs 3 were evac to Duc Pho at 1830hrs with Command and Control Helicopter and 2 were not evac the last 5 were minor wounds. Charlie Company reports the following PFC James D. Sanders and PFC Homer Buckingham where evac to 27th Surgical Hospital.

 

Delta Company
October 7, 1968

Delta Company 1-20 Security mission on LZ UPTIGHT and Battalion reserve. At 0810hrs Delta Company reference to their Combat Assault from LZ Buff to BS726855 PZ 0722hrs and LZ at 0742hrs LZ Cold. At 0950hrs Delta Company at BS733873 spotted 40 VC with packs and weapons, dressed in black and gray uniforms, moving southeast requests gun ships ASAP and at 1038hrs Delta Company is at LZ UPTIGHT. LZ UPTIGHT received 25-30 rounds of 82mm mortar. US casualties were 1 KHA and 20 WHA Delta Company reports PFC Earl L. Roberts frag wounds.

 

Echo Company
October 7, 1968

Echo Company is located at LZ Dottie where Battalion Forward is and coordinates with the Battalion Rear Elements and Base Defense elements on LZ Dottie. The 4.2 Platoon is located on LZ Dottie and by 1500hrs report their location at LZ Uptight where they continue to provide direct fire support for the (1-20 Infantry Battalion). Charlie Company and Recon Platoon made their Combat Assault from LZ Buff 1st PZ into LZ Lee complete by 0816hrs and at BS731822. At 1804hrs Recon Platoon reports their location at BS746829.Echo Company reports SP4 Thomas W. Mallabar was evac to 312th Evac Hospital with frag wounds at 1300hrs. SP4 William Kristinik was evac to 312th Evac Hospital at 1430hrs sick. SGT John R. Mason was evac to the 27th Surgical Hospital at 0945hrs sick.
